Why a Dog Bed?

Some people, (and I hope not many) may ask, why a dog needs a dog bed? It is amazing to me, that without fail, every time I brought home a foster dog, he/she would naturally try to rest on my dog Zoe's bed even when she was resting there. I remember seeing a very old little Dachshund that I fostered, trying to cram with Zoe in her bed, or sometimes there are large breeds, and they would do the same (and no, she was not happy about it!). So why do dogs tend to do that? Why don't they simply prefer to lie on the floor? Well, it's simple; they know what's good.
Besides the comfort in a dog bed, which dogs definitely appreciate, there may be another reason. Dogs are territorial. They know what's theirs, what belong to them and they protect that. Does this sound familiar? When a dog enters a new home, he/she knows that the spot where the pet bed is placed is his/her territory - their little space. It is very important to let them have this feeling of belonging and security. There is a sense of security that comes with a bed for your dog in your house. Whenever the dog comes back home from an exciting walk, or any outdoor activity, he/she gravitates to their bed to rest in. This becomes even more important if you have more than one dog, and they don't tend to like to rest together - provide each of them with a different pet bed. With this approach, each one gets their needs and they will fight less for this piece of territory.
I mentioned 'comfort' earlier. Dogs deserve comfort; a good pet bed promotes a deep level of sleep at night, and a joyful active day. For dogs that don't get to exercise often, it is even more important to provide them with a high quality bed, as they are more prone to Arthritis in the future. (Please get your dog the exercise that he/she needs, it is extremely important for their emotional well being, as well as their physique).
Be thoughtful and tuned in to your dog's needs, as he/she can't talk and ask for whatever it is they want. Show your dog that you love them!
